Dirt and soil are the major cause of wear to your carpet fibers, you should vacuum your carpets at least twice a week to reduce the amount of dirt within the carpet which will reduce the wear to the carpet fibers and therefore prolong the life of your carpet. When you notice a spot or spill on your carpet you must act fast to remove it, use a clean absorbent white towel and hot tap water containing a mild detergent (the detergent must not have a bleaching agent) blot the stain with the towel and hot water, never scrub or rub, do not over wet the area as this may cause the spot stain to get bigger.
To draw out the stain you can place an absorbent towel or kitchen roll under something heavy like a book to draw out the moisture. If you are quick you have a good chance of removing the stain. Be careful when using carpet spotters and detergents as too much use will leave a dirt attracting residue on the carpet making you carpet appear dirty.
